I recently had an experience during a job interview that left me questioning the professionalism of the process. I was interviewing for a position at a local government organization, and the Sr. Director was 25 minutes late to an onsite interview that was scheduled for an hour. The interview format was supposed to include a 5-minute introduction, 45 minutes of questions directed at me, and then 10 minutes for me to ask questions. While waiting, I was in the room with two senior managers and a corporate recruiter. We engaged in small talk, but I asked multiple times if we should reach out to the Sr. Director or if we could start without them. Each time, I was told to wait. Eventually, the Sr. Director arrived and seemed frustrated that we couldn't cover 50 minutes of content in the remaining 20 minutes. I tried to keep my answers concise and cut down on my questions to stay within the time limit, even suggesting we reschedule for a full interview, which was declined. This wasn't the first time I encountered such tardiness during interviews, and it made me wonder how to handle these situations better in the future. I’m curious about how common this is in the tech and NGO sectors, as I've seen it happen in both. Is it appropriate to exit politely after a third of the scheduled time has passed? If so, how should I phrase that exit? I’ve noticed a lack of urgency in these environments, which is concerning.
