After nearly 14 years with a microfinance foundation in the Philippines, I was laid off due to my position being deemed redundant. I'm quadriplegic, and this experience has been incredibly challenging to process. I started my journey with the foundation in June 2010, and after a life-altering motorcycle accident in February 2011, I was left with a spinal cord injury. The foundation was supportive during my recovery, covering my medical expenses and eventually offering me a remote graphic design position. For years, I was able to support my family, including my elderly parents and a full-time caregiver. However, changes in leadership around 2023-2024 raised concerns about my job security. Management began inquiring about my medical records and my ability to work, despite my proven capability to complete my tasks. In May 2026, I was approached by senior management at home and offered a financial package to resign voluntarily. Faced with the pressure of supporting my family and the uncertainty of my future, I reluctantly signed the agreement. By June 2026, I was officially out of the organization. It’s disheartening to realize that my contributions were overlooked, and the compassion that once characterized the foundation seems to have faded. Now, I'm left searching for new opportunities in graphic design, web development, and AI systems, hoping to find a place where my skills can still make a difference.
