I spent the day scrolling through customer service resume examples, feeling increasingly frustrated. It seems like my friend's connection to the hiring manager gave them an unfair advantage in landing a job that I applied for. I mean, sure, I can change "managed" to "spearheaded" on my resume, but that doesn't really level the playing field, does it? Job hunting feels like an endless cycle of tailoring every bullet point, explaining every gap in my employment, and crafting a personal love letter to a company that sells accounting software. Meanwhile, others seem to skip the line because they already know the manager. When I bring this up, people tell me it's just networking, but it feels different when you know someone who can vouch for you versus someone who just wants to help a friend. I get that referrals can be valuable, especially when they come from someone who genuinely knows your work, but it feels unfair when the recommendation is based solely on friendship. What really gets under my skin is the advice I see afterward. Suggestions like "maybe your resume needs stronger verbs" or "perhaps your cover letter wasn't enthusiastic enough" seem to miss the point entirely. No one acknowledges that I could have submitted a perfectly good application, only to be overshadowed by someone who already had the manager's trust before I even knew the job was open. If I were in their shoes, I might take the introduction too, but I wish people would stop lecturing about how a well-formatted resume is what made them stand out. The reality is, they had someone in the room advocating for them while I was just another PDF in the pile. I wonder if they'd still defend the hiring process as fair if they had to compete without any recognition.
