I applied for a Medical Assistant position back in July and was thrilled when I received a call for an interview just an hour after submitting my application. During the interview, I learned that the role was in a department I wasn't particularly excited about, but I needed the job to secure a paid externship for school. After a week, I received an offer letter for the position, which I accepted, and I went through the entire hiring process, signing my job description, contract, and agreeing to the pay. However, just three days before my start date, I got a call informing me that they wanted to switch me to a completely different department. They claimed it would better accommodate my schedule, but my hours remained the same—9 to 5. It turned out that the Medical Assistant who was supposed to train me was transferring to the position I was originally hired for. As I began my training, I overheard comments from her and the office manager about her dissatisfaction with the provider and how she had been trying to get someone hired to replace her so she could move departments. As time went on, I noticed a significant decline in patient volume and workload, which had dropped by half since I started. I even went from working five days a week to four, and the comments from staff suggested that the company might not keep the provider on much longer. It felt like I was intentionally hired into a position that was destined to fail, and the last-minute job switch left me with no choice but to accept it. The duties were supposed to be the same, but they turned out to be completely different. I've asked multiple times to be trained in other areas to keep busy, but I've been consistently denied. This whole situation feels like a bait and switch to me. Did I get taken advantage of because I needed this job for my externship?
