  1. 1

I've been job hunting for nearly two years now, and as a 40-year-old Black man, the experience has been incredibly disheartening. I've done everything they recommend: updated my resume, tailored my cover letters, earned certifications, built a personal brand, and polished my LinkedIn profile. I've even practiced my interview responses to perfection, yet I still find myself facing silence or rejections, often for positions that don't reflect my worth. The statistics are alarming—Black unemployment is currently at 6.2%, nearly double that of white workers. I've read that a white applicant has a 36% better chance of getting a callback than I do with the same qualifications. It's frustrating, especially when over 40% of Black professionals report experiencing discrimination in hiring processes. Even as someone without a criminal record, I feel like I'm being judged unfairly. As I navigate this challenging job market, I want to emphasize that this isn't about my qualifications; it's about a system that isn't designed for people like me. I'm sharing my story not to seek sympathy but to raise awareness about the barriers we face. It's crucial for recruiters and hiring managers to recognize these patterns and actively work to dismantle them. We deserve fairness, not just favors. To anyone else in my position, remember that our value is not defined by these biased systems—we are skilled and deserving of better opportunities.
