I'm currently working as a case manager at a healthcare company, and I've been in this role for about four weeks now. The job pays well and offers good insurance, but I'm really struggling with the nature of the work. Most of my day is spent doing paperwork, and the only time I interact with clients is to request specific documents. This isn't what I envisioned when I pursued my degree in psychology and social work; I wanted to be directly involved in helping people with their mental health. I find myself dreading going to work each day, as I sit at my desk waiting for documents and writing letters. I'm also not comfortable making the ten phone calls a day that are required, as I prefer face-to-face interactions. On top of that, I don't feel a connection with my coworkers, who seem to have different priorities than helping others. I often eat alone outside, which adds to my feeling of loneliness. I'm considering whether I should start looking for a new job that allows for more direct mental health care involvement. However, the thought of going through the job search process—resumes, interviews, and all that—is overwhelming, especially since this is my first job after graduating. I'm torn between staying in a stable position that pays well and pursuing my passion for direct client interaction.
