Today, I found out that my entire department at the pathology company I work for has been laid off. Surprisingly, I feel a sense of relief. For years, this company has been skirting the lines of quality and patient care, and it's been frustrating to watch. Despite the decline over the last 10-15 years, they managed to maintain a facade through clever marketing and by punishing those who dared to speak out. Recently, they made a disastrous decision regarding their Laboratory Information System, which led to a significant drop in service delivery and staff morale. As a result, many people left, and the services that remained were never able to recover. To make matters worse, they opened a new lab at a different hospital, filled it with unprepared staff, and rolled out new equipment that was not ready for use. Predictably, everything fell apart. The management has a long-standing reputation for ignoring feedback from anyone outside of their inner circle, especially when it comes to safety concerns. Now, for reasons that weren’t clearly explained, they’ve decided to make my entire department redundant. While I’m saddened by the loss of my job, I can’t help but feel that this might be a turning point for the company. I just hope that those who have driven it into the ground don’t find new positions of power elsewhere. It’s a bittersweet moment, but I’m hopeful for the future.
