Today was a whirlwind as I was laid off from a job I absolutely hated. I woke up at 7 am to an ominous HR meeting invitation labeled "Team Update," and I immediately sensed something was off. Walking into the office, I saw someone leaving with a box, and it hit me that I was about to be part of a mass layoff due to company restructuring. Twenty of us were blindsided, including long-tenured employees who had dedicated decades to the company. While I’m still in shock, I’m trying to focus on the positives. I’m early in my career, and I’ll receive severance and unemployment benefits. Plus, I can enjoy the rest of the summer, which is a silver lining considering I hated the job from day one. The toxic culture and poor working conditions had me burnt out, and I was already planning to quit, so this feels like a better alternative on paper. I had just started this full-time, salaried position six months ago after being unemployed for three months, and now I’m anxious about re-entering the job market, especially given the current state of things. But I’ve done it before, and I guess I’ll have to muster the energy to do it again. For now, I’m hanging out with friends, enjoying a drink, and trying to make the most of my newfound free time. If anyone has advice or words of wisdom, I’d really appreciate it.
