I’m currently facing a tough situation at my job in New Jersey. I've been working remotely for the past six years after relocating to another state to be closer to my family during COVID. My remote work arrangement was never formally approved, and now my company is implementing a forced return-to-office (RTO) policy. My manager just gave me an ultimatum: either I return to the office in New Jersey within two weeks or I need to find another job. Relocating back is not an option for me due to my family commitments, including a spouse, young kids, and aging parents who help with childcare. I'm trying to figure out the best way to navigate this situation. My main concerns are financial stability and ensuring I remain eligible for unemployment benefits while I search for a new job. I’ve read that quitting voluntarily can disqualify me from unemployment benefits, so I’m considering whether I should simply inform my manager in writing that I cannot relocate due to my family ties and let them initiate my termination or if I should just quit when the two weeks are up. Additionally, I’m unsure about where to file for unemployment if I do get terminated. I currently reside in another state but pay taxes in New Jersey. Should I file in New Jersey or my current state? I’d really appreciate any advice from those who have been in similar situations, especially regarding the best steps to take during these two weeks to protect myself legally and financially.
