I was terminated from my job at a multi-building campus on a Friday, just over a week ago. I started working there as a receptionist on December 1, 2025, and had been performing well, even receiving praise for my efforts despite the heavy workload. However, things took a turn when our receptionist quit in early February, and I was forced to cover her shifts. The company never hired a replacement, and I ended up filling in for months. In May, my coworker discovered a bedbug at the reception desk, which we reported to HR. Shortly after, I found bedbugs in my apartment and had to spend around $2,500 to treat the infestation, although my landlord reimbursed most of it. I reported the bedbug issue at work multiple times, but the management's response was lackluster. They brought in an exterminator twice, but the problem persisted. The week before last, while working at the reception desk, I found another bedbug crawling on me. I documented it and reported it again, but instead of addressing the issue, HR told me to sit outside the desk and walk around to check in visitors. Then, on Friday, I was called into HR with my union representative and was abruptly terminated without any chance to defend myself. They cited attendance and performance issues, which I found baffling since I had nearly perfect attendance and had been overperforming. I mentioned the bedbug exposure, but they didn’t seem to care. My union rep was shocked by the lack of process and suggested I contact the legal department. Now, I’m pursuing a wrongful termination lawsuit and have filed for unemployment. I’m also switching my health insurance to state coverage, which is stressful since I rely on it due to a back injury. This whole situation has been incredibly frustrating and has taken a toll on my mental health. I just wanted to vent about the absurdity of it all and the challenges I now face in the job market.
