I recently applied for a job through a company portal that had a salary range listed as $90K-$135K. Given my experience and the high cost of living in my area, I requested $115K in my application. I felt I was a strong candidate for the role since it was quite specific to my industry. However, I didn't hear back for weeks. Out of the blue, a recruiter reached out to me via Indeed, saying he thought I would be a good fit for the same position. He asked me to apply again through the portal, but this time he mentioned the salary range was actually $90K-$105K. I was confused because I had already applied with the understanding that the range was higher. When I inquired about the discrepancy, the recruiter explained that the salary range on the job posting was generated by an algorithm and wasn't reflective of the actual budget for the role. This left me wondering if I had been screened out for asking for a salary that was based on a misleading posting. It feels frustrating to think that companies might be using these tactics to attract candidates while not being transparent about their actual pay scales.
