I recently started working as a childcare worker at a local daycare, and it's been a challenging experience so far. I graduated last May with a BFA and spent about three months job searching before landing this position, which pays $22/hour. I began on October 5th, and I've been there for about three weeks now. Unfortunately, the training I received was minimal—just a four-hour module and a six-hour orientation. I was supposed to have training shifts, but the other teachers weren't informed that they were supposed to train me, so I ended up just observing them for eight hours without much guidance. Each classroom operates differently, and I find myself in a new room almost every day, which makes it even harder to adapt. I've also noticed some concerning behaviors among the staff, including yelling at the kids and using threats to manage their behavior. During a chaotic work meeting in my first week, we discussed the poor care provided by staff, but it felt disorganized and unproductive. One of my coworkers even joked that I’d want to quit like the last person who worked there, which didn’t instill much confidence. I feel quite isolated at work; the other employees seem standoffish, and I can't help but wonder if my identity as a trans woman with a septum piercing is contributing to that. Right now, I have no savings, so quitting isn't an option. I'm actively looking for new opportunities that align with my degree in the arts, but in the meantime, I'm considering doing DoorDash to help cover my expenses. However, I know that’s not a sustainable solution. Every day before work, I feel a sense of dread due to the chaotic environment and poor management. I just don’t know how much longer I can handle this job without a backup plan. If anyone has advice on navigating this situation or finding new job opportunities, I would really appreciate it.
