I'm currently weighing a significant career decision. I make $132K at my current job with a short 10-minute commute. The benefits include a 7% company match for my 401k and a pension that vests after 6 years. However, the work environment is toxic; leadership is incompetent and a coworker is causing issues by lying and reporting non-issues to HR. I'm feeling stunted in my role and frustrated with the lack of support. I've received a job offer for $198K, but it comes with a much longer commute of 60-70 minutes each way. The new role offers a 4% company match for the 401k and a pension that vests after just 3 years. The shift is 4/10s, which means I would have three days off each week, and there's the potential for overtime pay and differentials for weekend work. The work environment seems much better; the manager appears competent, and the team seems to have a healthy dynamic, although they are currently short-staffed due to recent departures. I'm leaning towards accepting the new job because of the pay increase and the opportunity for growth, but I'm worried about the long commute. My partner works long and inconsistent hours, so I don't think my absence for four days would be a huge adjustment. I’m trying to figure out if my excitement for the new role is clouding my judgment. Would the longer commute be worth it for the benefits and better work environment? I’m torn and would love to hear any advice.
