I’m trying to transition back into mortgage finance after stepping away for about a decade. I previously worked at a major GSE during the Great Recession and spent five years in the mortgage product line. Due to personal circumstances, I had to leave that role and have since worked in smaller regional banks, focusing on retail lending and credit risk analytics for the past six years. Recently, I've realized that if I had stayed in the mortgage sector, my career trajectory might have been much better, especially considering the post-Covid recovery. I believe that mortgages are essential products with consistent demand, unlike indirect lending, which can be halted by banks facing liquidity issues. Now, I'm wondering if it's realistic to pursue a return to mortgages given the current market conditions and hiring trends, or if I should consider exploring other product lines instead.
