I recently came across some valuable advice on negotiating severance packages after being laid off. As an HR professional suggested, I learned that instead of focusing on my tenure or contributions, I should highlight factors like being part of a protected class or having documented medical accommodations. This approach is more effective because companies tend to respond better to potential legal risks rather than personal merit. I’ve started keeping all my records related to these issues saved in a personal email account, ensuring I have access to them even after my company IT access is cut off. This way, I can present solid evidence if I need to negotiate further. If negotiations stall, I plan to consult with an employment lawyer who can guide me on the specifics of what I can ask for and how to approach the conversation. Additionally, I learned that there are other aspects to negotiate beyond just an increase in severance pay, such as extended COBRA coverage, keeping my company tech, or reimbursement for certifications. I’m sharing this to empower others who might be in a similar situation. It's crucial to stay informed about the changing laws that could affect negotiations.
