I recently started my first job at a managed service provider right after high school, and I’m feeling a lot of pressure. I'm only 18 and still studying cybersecurity, so I’m grateful for the opportunity, but I constantly worry about my job security. My boss and the other employee who are supposed to guide me work from home and aren’t the best at communication. They often leave me without clear direction, which adds to my stress. I’ve been pushed into doing help desk work, something I wasn’t initially hired for, and while I know it’s a good way to gain basic skills, I find it hard to pick up the phone. I’ve done it at other jobs and enjoyed it, but I’ve been avoiding it here for months. My boss, who is autistic, sends messages that lack context and often treats me like I should know what he means, which is frustrating. He uses AI to send messages and gets confused when I ask for clarification. It feels like every time he messages me, I brace for something overwhelming, but it usually ends up being a new task he wants my feedback on. On top of this, I’m feeling the weight of being in college while still living in my hometown, which wasn’t my plan. I thought I’d be somewhere else by now, and it’s hard to see myself doing this job for the next 30 years. I want to be clear that I’m not trying to complain about my situation, especially with the job market being tough. I’m not planning to quit; I’ll stick it out until I have to leave. I just need to manage my feelings about all this and would appreciate any advice on handling anxiety in this field.
