I currently work at a tech startup where job titles seem to be inflated across the board. I hold the title of 'Senior Director of Marketing,' but I suspect that in a more traditional company, my role would actually be classified as a Senior Manager based on my responsibilities. Recently, I was informed that I’m being promoted to 'VP of Marketing.' While I’m excited about the promotion, I can’t help but worry about how this inflated title will impact my future job searches. I don’t plan to stay with this company long-term, and I’m concerned that when I eventually look for a new position, I might not qualify for genuine VP roles that align with my title. At the same time, applying for lower-level positions with this new title could disqualify me from consideration in some cases. Has anyone else experienced this kind of situation? I’d love to hear how others navigated the tricky waters of job hunting with inflated titles.
