I worked in a medical office for 5 years, starting in 2021, and I really loved my job. I made great friends there and enjoyed my time. However, I faced a tough decision recently due to rising childcare costs. With three kids, the summer camp fees jumped to $700 a week, which was more than my take-home pay. After discussing it with my husband, we decided it was better for me to stay home with the kids rather than work and still struggle financially. My boss was supportive, and I gave more than a month’s notice before leaving, with the understanding that I could reach out after summer to see if there was an opening. Now that summer is ending and my kids are going back to school, I want to reach out to my boss to ask for my job back. I left at $19.50/hour, but I’m considering asking for $22/hour this time. I believe this is reasonable because if I had been making that rate before, I could have afforded the summer camp, and I’ve seen similar positions in the area starting at $20-$22/hour. Plus, my former workplace has had a high turnover rate, losing several employees since I left, which might indicate they need help. I plan to contact my boss this week to discuss my availability in about 3-4 weeks. However, I’m also contemplating whether I should apply for other jobs simultaneously. I was told there’s no guarantee of a position when I left, but I’ve heard through friends still working there that they’ve had issues with the new hire replacing me. I’m nervous about asking for a higher rate, fearing it might jeopardize my chances of getting my job back. Should I mention that I'm exploring other opportunities when I talk to her? This is a new situation for me, and I'm seeking advice on the best approach.
