I was laid off three weeks ago after spending four years as a Software Engineer in the fintech sector. My last day was September 1st, and although it hasn't been long, I'm already feeling quite demotivated in this challenging job market. During my time in the industry, I built and maintained banking applications, supported production issues, and worked on automated and functional testing, including performance testing for client-specific releases. My tech stack is pretty extensive, including Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Kubernetes, Docker, Cucumber, Jenkins, GCP, React, YAML, Bash/Shell, and Linux. In the past three weeks, I've sent out nearly 200 applications for various roles like Software Engineer, application/product support, QA/SDET, and DevOps. Unfortunately, I'm hardly receiving any calls back. It feels overwhelming to see job postings with 100+ applicants, which makes me doubt my chances of getting back into the industry. I find myself obsessively checking job boards like Indeed and LinkedIn throughout the day, even considering unrelated jobs that pay around $50k, which is concerning me. I've had two screening calls, but I was so discouraged going into them that I feel my energy was off. The worst part is the nagging voice in my head telling me I'm wasting my time applying and that I should look for something else to do. Knowing people in tech who have been searching for months only adds to my anxiety. I'm reaching out to anyone who has been laid off recently or has gone through this before: how did you manage to stay motivated? Did you eventually find another role in tech?

I got laid off three weeks ago, and I'm still struggling with the aftermath. Initially, I was in shock, but now it's a mix of sadness and anger. I wake up some mornings and can't shake off the thoughts of what happened. Normally, I’m good at moving on, but this time feels different. I joined my previous company in December 2025 and reported directly to my manager. We had monthly one-on-ones where he consistently praised my work and never mentioned any performance issues. In fact, I received a 'Meets Expectations' rating in my mid-year review. I often took on tasks that others avoided, and while we weren't close friends, we had a decent rapport, often chatting casually since we shared a community background. On the day I was laid off, I received a sudden meeting invite with our VP. When I asked my manager about it, he responded with, 'I don’t know, you need to join it.' That response felt off to me. I joined the meeting and was laid off. Later that evening, he reached out on WhatsApp, apologizing for not being able to respond earlier. I asked him to keep me in mind for any future opportunities, but then I heard nothing for three weeks. Out of the blue, he called me asking how I was doing and if I needed help. He mentioned feeling bad for not reaching out sooner and offered to refer me for other positions. He even had the nerve to say it was a business decision and that he didn’t want to discuss what happened. I couldn't believe it—three weeks of silence, and now he wants to check in? I’m honestly considering deleting his number. It might sound childish, but I really don’t want to see him again. I just needed to vent about this whole situation.

I got laid off yesterday from my tech job after four years of working with different teams. It’s been a tough blow, especially since I had just pushed myself to work over 12 hours a day last month. This was my first job, and now I feel completely lost about what to do next. People around me have been really supportive, offering to refer me to their contacts, but I’m struggling with my confidence and fear that I won’t be able to break back into the industry. I had so many plans, especially with my husband. We were planning to start a family soon, and his 30th birthday is next month. I wanted to surprise him with something special, but now everything feels uncertain. On top of that, I have retired parents living with us, and I’m responsible for their care. Looking back, I regret not planning for a baby last year; maybe it would have been easier to handle if I had. I just feel overwhelmed right now.
