I was laid off yesterday from Edelman, where I worked for 9 years. I wasn't anticipating layoffs, but deep down I had a feeling I might be at risk since I was at the top of my salary band and wasn't likely to get promoted anytime soon. I received 3 months of severance and healthcare, which could be worse, but I'm still in shock about the whole situation. The worst part is that I've pigeonholed myself into a specialty area within my field, and now I find myself lacking the skills to manage many market research projects. Additionally, most job opportunities in my field are in NYC, but I no longer live there.
