I've been working as a contractor at my company, and my manager recently expressed a desire to extend my contract indefinitely or convert me to a full-time role due to my strong performance. However, things took a turn when there was a leadership reshuffle. A new upper management team has come in, and it seems like my new director is unable to approve my contract extension, despite my manager having the budget and the intention to keep me on board. The new VP is hesitant to sign off on my extension, citing cost issues and a short-term hiring freeze for full-time hires. While I understand that contractors like me might not be directly affected by the freeze, the situation feels precarious. My manager has expressed about 80 percent confidence in my situation, but I can't shake the feeling that the reshuffle and the mention of cost issues are red flags. To be safe, I've started applying for new jobs and reconnecting with my contacts. I truly enjoy my current role and hope I won't need to make a move, but I want to be prepared for any eventuality.
