I was laid off about a month ago and jumped into job hunting right away, applying to nearly every position within an hour's commute in my mid-sized city. Fortunately, I secured a full-time role pretty quickly, though it was contract-to-hire and didn't pay very well. Still, it was in my field of study, with a reputable company, and I thought I could manage the long commute. However, not long into this new job, I received a callback for a position I had interviewed for earlier. This new opportunity offers a much shorter commute, a significant pay increase of around $20k per year, and is permanent. It's also in a field I'm passionate about and comes with more responsibilities. It's with a non-profit organization, which raises some concerns about stability and advancement, but I got some reassurances from the department leader. After two days of careful consideration and discussions with family and friends who have experience in similar roles, I decided to accept the new offer. I’m waiting to officially resign until I pass the background check and receive a firm offer, which my future employer has agreed to. I feel guilty about leaving my current role so soon, especially since I like the team and find the work engaging. I worry that I might be burning bridges with this big company and that I won’t be in a position to ask for a promotion later on. However, I really feel like I couldn't let this new opportunity slip away. I hope I'm making the right choice.

I was laid off from my temp job yesterday, and my last day is next Friday. It's a mixed bag because I have a job offer that expires next week and I'm also waiting to hear back about another interview that’s in the offer stage. When I started, I learned that the team was looking to hire a permanent employee, which made me wonder why they didn’t just keep me or the other temp worker. Eventually, they hired someone else, and my workload dropped significantly, leaving me with days where I had nothing to do. It was frustrating, especially after a leadership change in the summer. I asked if my performance was an issue, and I was reassured that I did good work, but the team just became too crowded with not enough tasks to go around. I was initially told I’d be guaranteed full-time through August, and even got another month guaranteed during a meeting, so I’m left questioning if I did something wrong. The other temp is still on the team, and we had split responsibilities, which adds to my confusion. I took about a month to acclimate to the job after being underemployed for 1.5 years, and I felt I was doing well based on feedback from my superiors. After discussing it with others, they suggested that I might not have stood out enough, which could be true. This layoff has thrown a wrench into my plans too. I recently signed a lease with my girlfriend, and we were set to move in together soon. The job offer I have would require me to move out of state, while the other job wouldn’t. I felt good about my interview for that position, but nothing is guaranteed yet. We got a good deal with the first month of rent free, but now she might need to find a roommate or I’ll have to cover my share while I’m away. Initially, I didn’t feel the impact of the news, but when it hit me, it felt overwhelming, leading to an emotional outburst. I think I might need to seek some therapy to help cope with this situation.

I recently found myself in a tricky situation regarding unemployment. I’m currently working a temporary job at a university, but I was informed that my employment will end next Friday. I've been in this role full-time since late May, after doing part-time training the week before. The good news is that I have a job offer that expires next week, and I’m also waiting to hear back about an interview process. However, regardless of which opportunity I pursue, I anticipate being unemployed for at least two weeks. I’m wondering if I would qualify for unemployment benefits during that time. It’s my first experience with unemployment, so I’m a bit unsure of the process.
