I recently faced a challenging situation regarding a job offer. After being terminated from a previous role, I'm now in the process of a background check for a new position. The background check is asking for the reason behind my termination, and I'm uncertain about how to respond. Should I say I was laid off or be honest and say I was terminated? I'm really worried that my answer could jeopardize this opportunity. Additionally, the form asks if they may contact my former employer. I’m hesitant because I don't want them to find out about my termination. I’ve seen advice suggesting to keep it vague, like saying it was a "poor fit" or a "mutual separation." But I’m also aware that some companies might disqualify candidates who admit to being let go, which feels unfair. I'm trying to navigate this carefully, as I really want this job and am anxious about how my past could impact my future.

I recently received a job offer and I'm currently in the process of completing the background check. The form is asking if they can contact one of my previous employers and also inquiring about the reason for my departure. I was terminated from one of my roles, and I'm feeling anxious that disclosing this might lead to the revocation of my job offer. I'm considering saying that I was laid off instead and allowing them to contact my former employer. I'm really unsure about the best approach to take in this situation.
