Navigating my principal interview and considering a senior role opportunity

I recently had my first interview for a principal level role at a company that I really admire. The director and hiring manager seemed to like me, which gives me hope, but I know the competition is tough since they mentioned reviewing a lot of resumes. I noticed there's also a senior position available, which is a step down from the principal role. I'm considering asking the recruiter if I could be considered for that position if I don't progress through the next two interview rounds. I'm a bit hesitant because I don't want to come off as desperate or like I'm doubting my qualifications for the principal role. However, I really want to keep the door open for any opportunity within this company.
