I recently found myself questioning whether my interview attire is too formal. I've been unemployed for a while, and for every in-person interview, I've worn the same suit. I was always told that it's better to overdress than underdress, and I thought standing out among other candidates would be beneficial. However, after receiving zero job offers, I'm starting to wonder if I'm going overboard with my outfit choices. I've been getting mixed feedback from friends and family. Some say I look great, while others suggest that my tie and pocket square might be distracting and could take the focus away from my qualifications. They recommended that I tone it down a bit, especially if I'm applying for roles that don't require such formal attire. I understand that the level of formality should match the job I'm pursuing, but I'm still unsure what the right balance is. For example, if I'm interviewing for a management position, a suit seems appropriate, but for more casual roles, like a line cook or a warehouse position, it might be too much. Moving forward, I think I might try removing the pocket square and opting for a more neutral tie. I want to ensure that my appearance enhances my candidacy rather than distracts from it.
