  1. 1

I was let go after just two weeks at a family-run logistics company where I was hired despite lacking experience in the sector. I had been very open during the interview about my background and was assured that I would receive training. However, the reality was quite different. There was no formal training plan, no employee handbook, and very little feedback. My boss would occasionally sit with me to explain tasks, but often they were busy with personal errands, leaving me with little guidance. My immediate colleague was overwhelmed and unable to provide the support I needed, which made learning the ropes even more challenging. By the end of my second week, I was handling basic tasks and some operational responsibilities, but the lack of structure led to mistakes. I was trying to pick up the pace as the department was busy, but I felt overwhelmed with the amount of information and the various software and spreadsheets I had to manage. I was also taking calls from clients without proper briefing, which added to my anxiety. On my last day, my boss pulled me aside and told me I wasn’t learning fast enough and that they needed someone with more experience. They mentioned that if I couldn’t get the basics right, it wasn’t worth their time. I felt blindsided because I was never informed that my performance would be reviewed so soon or that I could be let go if I didn’t meet their expectations. I had assumed the flexible probation period meant I would have more time to adjust. Looking back, I wonder if I should have been more aware of the expectations and if I was naive to think that the training would be more supportive. Did I mess up, or was the lack of structure and guidance the real issue?
