I recently got fired from my job due to multiple unnotified absences, which I fully own up to. My lifestyle was unhealthy, and honestly, I had been wanting to leave that position for a while since it felt like a dead-end role at a small company. While I was still employed, I started applying to other jobs and even interviewed at several places. I was thrilled to receive a verbal offer from a department director for a county position, pending the completion of paperwork and a background check. I provided references from a previous employer, but I’m feeling really anxious about how the background check will turn out. When I applied, I listed myself as 'Present' at my last job, where I was actually fired, and I also padded my job title to 'Associate Admin.' My old employer had initially hired me under that title, but I was later labeled as 'IT Specialist' and was told I would eventually be promoted to 'Associate Admin,' which never happened. I ended up leaving that job about four months before getting this new offer, so I kept quiet and just worked. Now, I’m worried that the termination and the title discrepancy will look bad during the background check and that HR might rescind the job offer. I didn’t lie about my job duties; they were accurate, and I have no criminal record. I feel like I really messed up, and I’m not sure how to handle this situation. If anyone has been in a similar position, I would really appreciate any advice on what to say or how to act.
