I had an interview yesterday for a position that had a salary listed in the job posting. The conversation started off with the usual questions, and when I confirmed that I was okay with the stated salary, the interviewer surprised me by asking about my previous salary. I was caught off guard since I’ve never been asked this before in an interview. Feeling pressured, I answered honestly, revealing that my previous salary was about $20,000 less than what this new job is offering. Now, I can’t stop thinking about that question and whether I should have responded differently. If I don’t get the job, it’s not the end of the world, but I want to be better prepared for future interviews.
