I recently left my job at a tech company where I was working as a project manager. The environment was extremely toxic, filled with micromanagement and constant stress, which ultimately led me to quit without having another position lined up. Now that I'm in the interview process for new roles, I often get asked why I left my last job. I want to avoid badmouthing my former employer but also don't want to come off as unprofessional. I'm considering how to frame my departure in a more positive light. Some suggestions I've seen include saying it wasn't a good fit or that I was looking for a workplace culture that better matched my skills. I think I might go with the idea that I was seeking more growth opportunities, as that seems to be a common and safe response. I want to keep it vague and positive while also being honest about my desire for a better work environment.
