I recently landed a part-time job at a store that's still under construction, and I'm feeling uneasy about some of the communication I've had with them. I had a good in-person interview and was told to expect a call with their decision, but instead of a call, I received an offer letter via email a few days later. The lack of communication made me question their professionalism, but I assumed they were just busy getting the store ready. Now, I've received an email asking for sensitive information to set up my I-9 and direct deposit, including my SSN, a copy of my SSN, and my driver's license. They requested that I send each item separately for security reasons. I understand the need for this information, but I'm really uncomfortable sending it over email. I expressed my concerns in an email two days ago, but I haven't received a response. Is it unreasonable for me to insist on providing this information in person? I feel like this is usually done on the first day or through a secure employee portal. I’m also wondering if a password-protected PDF would suffice. Given my background in cyber security, I know that email is not a secure method for transmitting such sensitive information. The whole situation feels a bit off, especially since this is a new store still under construction. I'm starting to wonder if this could be a scam, especially since they haven't responded to my concerns. I’m hesitant to give them any personal information until I’m actually in the store and working.
