I recently faced a tough situation at my job as a contractor at a corporate company. I started on the same day as another contractor, whom I'll call P, and we both had no prior experience in this field. For months, my boss had been encouraging me about the possibility of a permanent position, frequently mentioning how excited she was about keeping me on the team and referring to me as part of the company's vision. I worked hard, took the initiative, and even created a detailed spreadsheet to showcase my contributions. However, last week, my boss informed me that P had been promoted to a permanent associate position, while I was not offered one. This was shocking, especially since I thought I was being considered based on my performance. My boss had been giving P special treatment, like mentorship and opportunities to learn skills I had asked for, which left me feeling sidelined. When I confronted my boss about my future, she said she couldn't take me on right now but suggested I wait until January for another potential opening. The issue is, my contract ends in January, so I feel uncertain about my job security. I’ve started to apply for new positions because I don’t want to be left unemployed. Now, I’m struggling with how to act around my boss and P. I feel hurt and distrustful, but I also don’t want to make things awkward or jeopardize any future opportunities. I’m torn between keeping my head down and doing my job while looking for other work, or mentally checking out. I really want to hear what others would do in my situation.
