I recently received a job offer for a government position after interviewing last Friday. The employer assured me that my offer letter would be sent immediately after our call, but I never received it. I reached out on Tuesday to confirm if the job was still available, and the HR rep admitted she had "forgotten about me." She then rushed me to complete various mandatory steps for onboarding, including fingerprinting and background checks, all of which needed to be done by the upcoming Monday. I had to scramble to schedule a drug test and drive 40 miles for digital fingerprinting. During this chaos, she kept pushing me to complete a child abuse background check and pay for my state background check, which I had to cover out of pocket, totaling over $100. Now, I'm feeling overwhelmed and considering ghosting the job. The pay is only $15 an hour, and the stress and costs involved seem disproportionate. I haven't even completed the required physical yet, and with everything going on, I’m questioning whether this job is worth it.
