Today, I had my first disciplinary meeting at my job in the arts after being with the company for 8 months. I'm 22 and this is my first big girl job. Last Friday, while working from home, I had to drive my mom to an appointment around 3:50 PM. I work from 9 to 5, and I know I should have communicated better. I took my work phone but didn’t realize it was signed out of iMessage, so I missed any messages. I also forgot to send an important email. I’ve been told my job is safe, but I feel really guilty about the whole situation. I usually get my work done early in the day, and this was the first time I had to step away. Now, I’m worried about the disciplinary meeting because they’re saying I was unavailable for the whole afternoon, even though I was responding to calendar invites. I understand it was my fault for not notifying my manager and for the lack of communication. I’m taking my first stretch of leave starting tomorrow, and I’ve been told they’ll send me a disciplinary letter while I’m away. I’m feeling anxious about how to approach the meeting. I know I need to take accountability, apologize, and show that I’ve learned from this experience. I’ve realized I need to be more vigilant with my work phone and laptop if I ever work from home again. I appreciate any advice on how to handle the meeting and what to say. I want to make sure I convey that I understand my mistakes and am committed to doing better in the future.
