I got laid off today from my role at a startup due to a pivot in the company's direction. I woke up to a message saying, "let's have a conversation once you're online," and I honestly wasn't expecting it to be about my job. During the call, my founder explained that fundraising has become challenging for our category, and the company doesn't have enough runway to continue in the current direction. This news hit hard because leaving a job wasn't an option for me; I'm funding the education of my two siblings. However, my time at this early-stage startup was incredibly valuable. In just a few months, I learned more than I had in years of traditional marketing. I worked on various projects, including go-to-market strategy, founder-led marketing, Reddit distribution, LinkedIn and X content, outreach, product positioning, AI workflows, and directly communicating with users to refine our messaging. One positive takeaway is that my founder offered to refer me to other companies, which I truly appreciate. Now, I'm actively searching for my next opportunity. If anyone is building an early-stage startup and needs someone who thrives on figuring out growth, GTM, and distribution from scratch, I'd love to connect.
