Today was a tough day at the hospital where I work. While on direct observation with a patient, things took a turn when she started unscrewing a screw from the door. I attempted to verbally de-escalate the situation and encourage her to hand over the screw. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware that I could physically intervene to prevent her from swallowing it. I hit my badge for help, but it was in my pocket and didn’t activate. When I finally called for assistance, a nurse came over, but the patient still refused to give up the screw. Other staff joined in to help, but by the time security arrived, she had swallowed it. After the incident, I had an interview with APS and patient relations where I explained everything honestly. I acknowledged my mistake and mentioned that I hesitated to call for help earlier because I didn’t want to escalate the situation further. I've been with the hospital for 10 months without any prior issues, and I was really hoping for some understanding. Now, I'm left wondering if I’ll lose my job over this. I know I made a significant error, and I take full responsibility, but I also feel that I did my best under the circumstances. The final decision rests with the CEO, and I’m just anxiously waiting to see if I’ll get another chance.
