I recently lost my job as a software developer, and it's been incredibly tough dealing with my family's reaction. They keep implying that my job loss was my fault, which is really frustrating. My parents and siblings ask me questions like, "Are you sure you can do this?" and "Why did you major in something you can't do?" They just don't understand the unfair treatment I received from my manager. As a computer science major, I was assigned to debug a C# .NET application that no one else understood, and I had less than a week to figure it out. To make matters worse, my manager restricted me from using AI tools, even though she relied heavily on them herself. I feel like the standards have changed with the rise of AI, and without those tools, mistakes were bound to happen. On top of that, my manager micromanaged everything, even how I sat at my desk, and constantly compared me to a colleague who had two years of experience when he started. Despite completing the bug fixes, it was never enough for her. I did have a rough start, showing up five minutes late once because I was new to the city and couldn't find parking, but I never did that again. It feels like she held onto that mistake while others got away with much worse behavior. It hurts that my family assumes I wasn't capable instead of recognizing how unreasonable the expectations were. Has anyone else faced this kind of blame from family after being let go?
