Today, I had an interview for a project manager position at a mid-sized tech firm, and it took a turn I wasn't expecting. The first half of the interview went well; we discussed my experience and the software they use. But then the HR lady, whom I'll call Sarah, asked me if I had any kids or planned to start a family soon. I was taken aback, knowing that this is a major red flag in interviews. I tried to redirect the conversation back to my skills and how I could contribute to the company, but she didn't take kindly to that. Sarah insisted that they have a 'family culture' and seemed to imply that they needed to ensure everyone shared that mindset. She mentioned past employees leaving for maternity leave during busy times and how it impacted the team. At this point, I was frustrated and pointed out that her question was legally questionable. She shrugged it off and suggested that if I was going to be 'difficult' about their culture, I probably wasn't a good fit. The interview ended shortly after that. Honestly, I feel like I dodged a bullet. It’s infuriating that companies think they can get away with such intrusive questions. I spent hours preparing for this interview, only to have it derailed because I wouldn't agree to their expectations about personal life. Part of me wants to report them, but I’m unsure if it would be worth the trouble. Has anyone else experienced this kind of 'family culture' nonsense? It feels like a euphemism for wanting to control every aspect of your life.
