I’m currently collecting unemployment benefits in Virginia and considering taking on a commission-only 1099 gig. I’m still actively looking for full-time work because I believe something is better than nothing. The commission role wouldn’t pay me anything until I start closing deals, and I anticipate only spending about 5-10 hours a week on it. I’ve learned that I can earn up to $100 a week without it affecting my benefits, but anything beyond that would be deducted dollar for dollar. I’ll need to report any self-employment earnings each week as well.
