I was recently laid off from my position as a Tech Manager, and at 49 years old, I'm now facing some tough financial questions. I currently have a financial corpus of about 7 crore, which includes investments in mutual funds, fixed deposits, real estate, gold bonds, and other savings. I'm seriously evaluating whether this amount will be sufficient to fund my son's education (he's in 12th grade and will soon be heading to college) and support our retirement plans. My wife is a homemaker, which adds to the pressure of ensuring financial stability. I've been reading various opinions and experiences from others who have been in similar situations. It seems that the answer really depends on our lifestyle and where we live. For instance, living in expensive cities like Mumbai or Bangalore could drain our savings quickly if we spend lavishly, while a more modest lifestyle in cities like Lucknow or Patna might allow us to stretch our funds further. I know that managing our monthly expenses is crucial, and if I can keep them under 1.5 lakh per month without dipping into the principal amount, we might be okay for the next decade. However, I'm aware that my son's college expenses will be a significant financial burden. This layoff has hit hard, but I recognize that I have a decent financial cushion. I'm considering taking on a low-stress job for a couple of years to help ease the situation while I reassess our financial strategy.
