I was recently let go from my job as a receptionist after just three months due to my performance not meeting expectations during the probation period. This news hit me hard because I genuinely enjoyed the role and was starting to get the hang of things, feeling more comfortable and asking for help less frequently. The reality is that I struggle with serious mental health issues, including depersonalization-derealization disorder (DPDR), OCD, and anxiety, which severely impact my memory and ability to retain information. This has made it incredibly challenging for me to keep a job; in fact, the longest I've ever held a position is just 11 months over the past 12 years. As I approach my 30th birthday, I'm feeling a mix of disappointment and frustration. I want to succeed and find fulfillment in a job I enjoy, whether that’s in retail or food service. However, my memory issues make even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming. I’ve received some supportive advice from others who have faced similar challenges, suggesting I consider roles that allow for more flexibility, like deliveries or night shifts, where I can work at my own pace. I know I need to find a way to cope with my memory issues, perhaps by taking notes or focusing on jobs that require less direct interaction with clients. Starting over is daunting, but I’m determined to keep trying and find a position where I can thrive.
