I tracked 147 job applications over the past three months, and I want to share what really made a difference in my response rate. Initially, I sent out 68 applications using a generic resume and only received 4 callbacks. It was clear that I needed to change my approach. I started tailoring my resume for each application—not rewriting it entirely, but making small adjustments by swapping out 3 to 5 lines in the summary, experience, and skills sections to align with keywords from the job postings. This change led to my next 79 applications yielding 14 callbacks, which was a significant improvement. I also noticed that applying within 24 hours of a job posting going live doubled my response rate compared to waiting three days. Additionally, I found that jobs with fewer than 100 applicants on LinkedIn were much more likely to respond. While the idea of tailoring my resume seems obvious, it was tough to stay motivated when I was feeling depressed and exhausted from the job search. However, even these small tweaks made a massive difference in my results.

I've been on the job hunt for over eight months now, and I've been helping friends with their resumes along the way. I've realized that a lot of the common resume advice out there is outdated and not very useful. For instance, nobody seems to care about objective statements unless you're in Europe, and listing a long sidebar of skills doesn't get you noticed either. What really works is focusing on results instead of just listing tasks. Instead of saying I managed social media accounts, I learned to say something like I grew the Instagram following by 40% in six months, which contributed to increased sales. That's the key to getting callbacks. I've also found that sending the same resume for every application isn't effective. Just tweaking the summary and a few phrases to align with the job posting can make a significant difference, especially with ATS systems. You don't need to rewrite the whole resume; just adjust the top third. Lastly, I've switched from using Canva to Google Docs for my resume. The fancy designs might look nice, but ATS systems prefer clean, simple formats that focus on content.

I have been searching for a job for the past 8 months, and it feels like the job market is much worse than the numbers suggest. Despite the seemingly fine job statistics, there's a significant disconnect when it comes to actually finding a position, especially in the tech industry. I've noticed that many people, including myself, are experiencing a lot of frustration. There are so many part-time workers who want full-time hours, and many individuals have simply stopped looking for jobs altogether. Wages don't seem to be keeping up either. I regularly connect with other unemployed professionals who have solid experience, and it's disheartening to hear that they are also getting ghosted after months of searching. We are all trying to stay proactive by tailoring each application, networking extensively, and following up persistently, but it feels like an uphill battle.
