  1. 1

I recently applied for a job that required Mandarin proficiency, and my resume stated that I am bilingual in Mandarin and English. I assumed that meant I could communicate effectively in Mandarin, but I didn't specify my reading or writing skills. After submitting my application, I received a message from the recruiter entirely in Simplified Chinese, asking me to connect on WeChat. The email even included the phrase, "Since we're both Chinese." I responded by clarifying that I am Taiwanese American, and after that, I never heard back from her. It's frustrating because I know that speaking Mandarin doesn't automatically make someone Chinese. People from other countries, like Singapore and Malaysia, also speak Mandarin. This assumption based solely on language feels ignorant and dismissive. I understand the complexities around identity, especially regarding Taiwan's status, but it's disappointing to see such a lack of awareness in the hiring process.
