  1. 1

I work as a farm worker on a small agrotourism farm in Illinois, and the conditions here have become unbearable. The environment is toxic and poorly organized, with numerous OSHA violations that put employees at risk. My farm manager frequently breaks safety rules and has fostered a hostile atmosphere for anyone who dares to speak up. After months of voicing my concerns directly to her and to management, I decided to take a stand by filing a formal safety complaint, detailing all the issues and requesting a reassignment. Unfortunately, instead of addressing the situation, management retaliated by demoting me and cutting my hours from full-time to part-time. This feels like a clear case of retaliation, especially since I'm one of the few who has spoken out. Now, I'm considering quitting and want to know if I can qualify for unemployment under the 'good cause' clause, which applies when hours are cut illegitimately or when the workplace is unsafe. I’m also thinking about reporting the farm to OSHA, but I’m unsure whether to do that before or after I quit. I want to ensure I have enough evidence to support my claim for unemployment and hold my employer accountable. I'm looking for advice on how to navigate this situation and what steps I should take to protect myself.
