I was let go from my job of over three years on September 23 due to health issues that required me to take Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave. Unfortunately, I ran out of time on my leave and was terminated, which I completely understand given the circumstances. During my time off, I was often in the emergency room and did my best to keep my employer updated by calling in whenever I was unable to work. However, I recently received a letter stating that my unemployment benefits were denied due to "misconduct." This was shocking to me because I never quit or failed to communicate; I was simply unable to work due to my health. The denial letter provided no guidance on what steps I should take next, and I'm feeling lost. I’ve heard that sometimes big companies label terminations as misconduct to reduce their unemployment tax liabilities, and I suspect that might be what happened in my case. I’m looking for advice on how to appeal this decision, as I believe I have a valid case. Any help or insights on what my next steps should be would be greatly appreciated!
