Today, I found myself contemplating whether to negotiate my severance offer after being laid off from my role at a tech company where I worked for 10 years. The package they presented seems quite generous: 12 weeks of severance plus an additional 2 weeks for every year of service, which totals to 32 weeks. They also included health insurance coverage until the end of the month and 3 months of paid COBRA, along with equity acceleration for my next vesting. However, there are some clauses that caught my attention, like the can't sue, can't disparage, and can't disclose company secrets clauses, but thankfully, there’s no non-compete clause. I’m torn about whether I should push for a better deal or just accept it as is. I understand that severance offers are often take-it-or-leave-it situations, especially in this job market where I might need every bit of financial support while searching for a new position. After reflecting on the feedback I received from others, I’ve decided to sign the offer and move on. I wish all my fellow laid-off colleagues the best of luck in their job searches.
