I recently had a job offer from a company that I interviewed with about a month and a half ago. The interview went really well, and they offered me the position three weeks later, promising Monday to Friday hours with a good work-life balance. I was excited and even handed in my notice at my previous job, completing all necessary background checks while waiting for the contract. However, I just received the contract yesterday, and it raised several red flags. First, they want me to waive my rights to the 48-hour workweek protection under UK law. This means I could potentially be working more than the standard hours without my consent, and if I wanted to withdraw that consent, I would have to give three months' notice. Additionally, despite my clear request for weekends off during the interview, the contract states that I could be required to work weekends when needed. This is particularly concerning for me because my last job had a similar clause, and I ended up working almost every weekend for two years. There are also vague disciplinary procedures in the contract that worry me, including salary deductions and changes to job responsibilities. I haven't signed the contract yet, but I'm anxious about the possibility of being out of a job if I refuse to sign it and the implications it could have on my resume. I’m considering reaching out to them to discuss these issues, but I’m unsure how to approach it without jeopardizing the offer.
