  1. 1

I recently applied for a job opening at my company and, feeling excited, I mentioned it to a colleague. To my surprise, he decided to apply for the same position after I told him, even though he knew I was already in the running. Now, both of us have made it to the next round of the selection process. I can't help but feel a bit upset about the situation. I’ve always believed in avoiding direct competition with coworkers, especially when it comes to roles that I’m genuinely interested in. It feels a bit unfair, and I’m torn about whether I should talk to him about my discomfort and ask if he would consider withdrawing his application. I realize that might come off as unreasonable, though. I’ve been reading some advice online, and it seems like many people think I shouldn’t have mentioned my application in the first place if I didn’t want to compete. Some even suggested that my colleague is entitled to pursue the opportunity just like I am. I guess I need to remind myself that it’s not personal, and if he gets the job, I could still ask him for help getting in with the company later on. It’s a tough situation, and I’m trying to navigate my feelings while also recognizing that everyone is looking out for their own best interests.
