I recently landed a job that pays my bills, and while I'm incredibly grateful for that, I can't shake the feeling of humiliation and shame that comes with it. After spending four months unemployed, I finally accepted a position as a cashier at a home improvement store. This is such a drastic change from my previous role as a Supervisor at a well-respected company, where I was in management for most of my career. Now, when people ask me what I do, I have to tell them I'm a cashier, and it feels like a punch to the gut. I see the pity in their eyes, especially from my peers and older folks who ask if I'm just using this as a stepping stone. The truth is, this is my life right now. I had to rely on food banks and local churches just to get by, and this job is the best I could find after countless applications and interviews that led nowhere. Every time I clock in, I feel a wave of shame wash over me. The small town I live in makes it even harder, as I run into people I used to know who recognize me and comment on my situation. I sobbed when I got the email confirming my job, and while I appreciate the steady work, I can't help but feel miserable about my current circumstances. I just needed to vent and share my feelings because this experience has been incredibly tough.
