I was laid off in the first week of June and found myself in a whirlwind of job offers shortly after. Within just four days, I received two offers, but then a third one came in with a salary that was $15,000 higher than the others. I made the mistake of choosing the higher pay, but after just four weeks, I was laid off again due to the company losing half its business. Since then, I've been job hunting for about three weeks now. Interestingly, the day after my layoff, a company I had applied to during my first round of layoffs reached out to me to see if I was still interested. I jumped at the chance, went through two phone interviews, and then an in-person interview at their plant. They offered me the job the next day, which I accepted last week. This role is in telecommunications/infrastructure with a base pay of $157,500 as a Senior Mechanical Engineer. The company has 15,000 employees in the US, offers unlimited PTO, and requires me to be in the office five days a week, which fits my current needs for work-life balance. Last week, I also interviewed with an aerospace company that focuses entirely on military work. They just tendered me an offer today, with a base pay of $145,000 and some appealing benefits, including the potential for a security clearance and international travel. However, I decided to stick with the telecommunications company because I want this to be my last engineering position, and I feel it aligns better with my family commitments. If the aerospace company had offered me last week, I might have gone with them instead. Now I'm left wondering if I should retract my acceptance of the telecommunications job and go with the aerospace position instead.

I was laid off yesterday after 25 years as a Mechanical Engineer. I had a feeling this was coming, especially since our salaries were reduced by 10% earlier this year due to declining sales. A new investor came in a couple of months ago, aiming to transform the company with AI and new equipment, which seemed like a red flag. In a surprising turn of events, I already have an interview lined up at a larger engineering firm that has eight times the sales of my previous employer. My base pay was $120k, and I’m hopeful about this new opportunity.
