I've been on a job hunt since February and have applied to 240 positions so far, keeping track of every application. It's been a frustrating experience, especially when I hear advice from family members who have been at the same job for over 20 years, like my uncle. He thinks I'm being too picky, but he doesn't understand the current job market. Most people who have been employed for a long time don't realize how things have changed. They offer outdated advice like just walking in to ask for a manager or suggesting I need to network more. They don't know what it's like to be ghosted by an ATS or to go through multiple interview rounds only for the role to get canceled. It's disheartening to explain my long employment gap, which was due to my full-time job search, and hear a recruiter question it. They are the gap! Their confidence in giving advice without any recent experience in job hunting is frustrating. I just want to feel less alone in this struggle.
